Careers guidance (CEIAG)

"Comprehensive"

There is a comprehensive approach to careers education information and guidance within the school. A range of elements is included in the school’s Life Matters programme which runs throughout Years 7 - 13. In Year 11, there is a concentration on preparation for the range of Post-16 choices. Students have access to a Careers Adviser from Entrust’s Careers and Participation Service and computer programmes which help to inform and support decisions.

Careers at KEVI

At King Edward VI High School, we are committed to providing all our students in years 7 to 13 with a comprehensive programme of careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) and work related learning (WRL). We have a careers team who have designed a programme to link to the Gatsby Benchmarks and uses Unifrog as a source of advice and guidance. We also employ independent careers advice for students to make appointments for individual consultation.

The school is working with the Careers and Enterprise Company (CEC) to delivery our CEIAG programme. This is reviewed using the Careers Compass Plus tool. We complete this review every half term.

Is centred around the student and their needs
Is integrated into the students’ experience of the whole curriculum
Encourages all students to consider their career throughout Key Stage 3, 4 and 5
Encourages all students to develop decision making skills

Raises aspirations and promotes equality and diversity

Miss Mee and Miss Tickell are the Careers Leaders at King Edward VI, there is also a careers team who design and oversee the content delivery of CEIAG. In addition they arrange employer workplace visits, careers workshops for students, and business enterprise activities.

Students also have the opportunity of attending higher education careers events though our work with the Higher Horizons organisation.

King Edward VI High School believes strongly in the importance and the role of Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance (CEAIG). We have a comprehensive careers education and guidance program, which includes detailed preparation for post-16 courses and all work experience placements. Our CEAIG programme includes employer workshops for students and activities including Y9 Enterprise Day. Students also have opportunities to attend careers events in Further Education and Higher Education, go on visits to employers and businesses.

King Edward VI has a dedicated careers team headed by Miss M Mee and Miss D Tickell. Entrust provide our independent careers advisor for all students. They offer impartial advice and guidance from Year 9 right through to Year 13. Additional support is provided for students in Year 9 when they are choosing their Key Stage 4 (GCSE/BTEC) options.

The Government’s Careers Strategy and statutory guidance uses the Gatsby Benchmarks to set out a range of requirements that schools and colleges must meet. We have mapped out how each our activities and events can support our students to make informed careers choices and achieve their full potential. An effective careers programme, as outlined in the Gatsby Report must meet the following 8 benchmarks:

Addressing the needs of each pupil
Linking curriculum learning to careers
Encounters with employers and employees
Experiences of workplaces
Encounters with further and higher education
Personal guidance

The COMPASS benchmark tool assesses schools’ progress towards meeting the 8 benchmarks.

All student leavers will be given a wide range of impartial information to make informed Post-16 choices about their future. We liaise with local and specialist national colleges, training providers, employers and the voluntary sector to ensure that knowledge is up to date and information can be shared about the needs, demands and the trends within the labour market locally, nationally and globally.

At King Edward VI we are developing careers based lessons in curriculum studies. These are currently being embedded in English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Business & IT.

Subject teachers and leaders understand the KEVI careers programme and learning outcomes. This is audited and tracked within careers programme and strategic careers plan by the Careers Leader. Subject teachers and leaders are also supported by the careers team and the CEC to further embed good careers practice within their subject areas. This means our curriculum learning is linked to careers learning which creates a coherent rational for careers within each subject area. Real life contexts and examples are linked to the teaching which shows relevance to the students and helps them engage more in the learning process. The teacher at KEVI are passionate about helping the students to succeed and ‘be the best they can be’ in the career pathway they choose.
