Design Technology

DT

At King Edward VI High School, our Design and Technology (DT) curriculum is designed to equip students with the skills to confidently engage with the designed world. We aim to nurture creative problem-solvers who can research, design, and make products to solve real-world problems. By working with a variety of materials and digital technologies, students develop into educated consumers and innovative thinkers.

Key Stage 3

During Key Stage 3, students rotate through different specialist areas to gain a broad experience of various materials and processes. They will work with food, paper, wood, polymers, and metal, learning how to apply their theoretical knowledge to practical projects. Their work is assessed on their ability to research, develop, and evaluate their design ideas, building a solid foundation of creative and technical skills.

GCSE

At GCSE level, students can choose to further their studies in Design and Technology. We offer a core GCSE in Design and Technology, which allows students to specialise in a particular material area. In addition, we offer vocational courses that provide a practical, hands-on approach to specific industries:

  • Hospitality & Catering: This course develops practical cookery skills and an understanding of the hospitality industry.

  • Child Development: This qualification focuses on the physical, emotional, and social development of children.

These courses are designed to be challenging and engaging, providing students with the skills and knowledge to pursue further education or careers in these fields.
