English & Literacy

At King Edward VI High School, the English department is dedicated to providing an exceptional foundation in both written and spoken English, seamlessly integrating language and literature from Year 7. Our core aim is to cultivate a deep appreciation for writing, reading, speaking, and literature, while also embedding essential examination skills and vocabulary from the outset.

Key Stage 3

Our curriculum aligns with the 2014 National Curriculum, emphasising spoken language, reading, and writing. Students participate in regular assessments, including speeches and presentations, fostering active discussion and inquiry. The reading curriculum introduces a wide array of prose, poetry, and drama from various periods, encouraging critical engagement with diverse texts. Writing skills are developed through the study and critical evaluation of reading materials, focusing on both fiction and non-fiction. Weekly "writing challenges" spark imagination, and dedicated skills lessons reinforce grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

GCSE Level

We teach the Eduqas GCSE English Language and English Literature specifications. Preparation for GCSE skills begins in Year 9, with specific lessons focusing on English Language reading and writing requirements. English Literature texts are thoroughly explored from the Summer term of Year 9, dedicating a full term to each core text. English classes are set to allow for differentiated instruction and flexible movement between groups based on individual progress.

A Level

For A Level, we follow the AQA specifications for English Literature (A; option B) and English Language. A Level Literature builds upon GCSE foundations, delving into prose, poetry, and drama, and includes a non-examined assessment component. A Level Language encourages students to analyse language evolution over time, focusing on reading and writing analysis, and incorporates a non-examined assessment for independent study. This course also examines the role of functional language in modern society.

Beyond the classroom, the department offers enriching opportunities such as theatre visits, participation in the national Poetry by Heart competition, and involvement in the Shakespeare Schools' Festival.
