Maths & Numeracy

At King Edward VI High School, our Mathematics department is dedicated to equipping students with the essential skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to succeed both in their academic careers and in life beyond school. We aim to foster a deep appreciation for mathematics by developing students' fluency in fundamental concepts, their ability to reason logically, and their skills in applying mathematics to solve problems.

Our curriculum is designed to be progressive and challenging, ensuring that every student is supported and stretched at each Key Stage.

Key Stage 3

Our Key Stage 3 curriculum is based on the 2014 National Curriculum, with a scheme of work adapted from White Rose Maths. This approach builds mathematical skills incrementally and uses interleaving to help students make connections between different topics and consolidate their understanding over time. Key topics covered include Number, Algebra, Ratio, Geometry, Probability, and Statistics.

GCSE Level

At GCSE level, we follow the Edexcel scheme of work. Students are placed on either the Foundation or Higher tier to best support their learning and maximise their potential. We maintain flexibility to ensure students can change tiers up to March of Year 11 if it is in their best academic interest. For students who need additional support, we offer the Edexcel Entry Level Certificate.

A Level

In our Sixth Form, we offer the Edexcel Maths A Level. This challenging and rewarding course is split into two core areas: Pure Mathematics, which covers advanced algebraic and calculus concepts, and Applied Mathematics, which focuses on Mechanics and Statistics. This course is ideal for students with a strong interest in mathematics and provides an excellent foundation for university studies in STEM subjects.

Enrichment and Support

The Maths department offers a variety of opportunities to enrich students' learning beyond the classroom. We encourage participation in national competitions such as the UKMT Maths Challenges and organise trips to maths-themed theatre shows. Our goal is to make mathematics an engaging and rewarding subject for all students.
