Physical Education

PE

At King Edward VI High School, our Physical Education curriculum is a vital part of our students' overall well-being. We believe that an active lifestyle is crucial for not only physical fitness but also for mental, emotional, and social health. Our goal is to encourage lifelong participation in sport and physical activity by exposing students to a wide variety of activities in a supportive and engaging environment.

Key Stage 3

During Key Stage 3, students participate in a diverse range of activities, including traditional sports like rugby, football, and gymnastics. Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive and challenging, with groups organised to ensure students are learning and developing in an environment that suits their ability and needs. The sports covered are influenced by the seasons and our excellent school facilities.

GCSE

At this stage, students have more personalised learning opportunities. Our core PE programme is option-based, allowing students to choose which sports they wish to focus on. We also offer the chance to access off-site facilities, such as golf courses and gyms. For students who wish to pursue the subject academically, we offer Edexcel GCSE PE, which includes a weekly theory lesson in Year 9 to help them make an informed choice.

A Level

For our Sixth Form students, we offer a range of advanced options:

  • A Level PE: This course combines practical excellence in one chosen sport with an in-depth academic study of topics such as anatomy, physiology, and sports psychology.

  • Sports Academies: Students can also join specialised sports academies, such as the Stafford Football Academy or the Staffordshire Refereeing Academy, to develop their skills and knowledge in a focused setting.

Clubs and Activities

We encourage all students to participate in our extensive extra-curricular sports programme, which is free and accessible to all. These activities are also used to assess students who are considering taking GCSE PE. We also offer exciting trips, such as our annual visit to Twickenham for an England Rugby Union International match, and trips to a local climbing centre for our GCSE PE students.
