History

At King Edward VI High School, we believe that the study of History is essential for understanding the modern world. Our curriculum is designed to help students develop a deep curiosity about the past and to hone critical thinking, reasoning, and enquiry skills. We encourage students to make connections between historical events and current affairs, enabling them to become informed and engaged citizens.

Key Stage 3

The Key Stage 3 curriculum follows the National Curriculum and provides students with a broad and chronological understanding of British history and its links with the wider world. Topics covered range from the Norman Conquest and the Medieval period to the Industrial Revolution and the World Wars, providing a solid foundation for further study.

GCSE

History is a popular option at GCSE, where students follow a dynamic and challenging course. The curriculum focuses on four key areas:

  • Conflict and Upheaval: Exploring significant events such as the Peasants' Revolt in England.

  • Germany in Transition: Examining the tumultuous period from 1919 to 1939.

  • Modern UK History: A study of the social and political development of the UK from 1919 to 1990.

  • Crime and Punishment: A fascinating long-term study tracing changes in crime and punishment from c.500 to the present day.

A Level

At A Level, we offer a comprehensive course that allows students to specialise in key periods of history. The curriculum includes modules on:

  • Tudor England (1445-1509): A study of the political landscape of late medieval England.

  • Nineteenth-Century France (1814-1870): Examining the profound changes in France during this period.

  • The Middle East (1905-2011): An in-depth look at the changing face of the Middle East from empires to dictatorships.

The A Level course also includes a significant coursework component, allowing students to conduct their own historical research. A History qualification provides an excellent foundation for a wide range of careers, from law and journalism to finance and marketing, due to the invaluable skills it develops.
