- Key Stage information | King Edward VI High School, Stafford
Curriculum Key Stage information Search... Contact Key Stage information Subjects Assessment and Reporting Homework Careers Guidance Understanding Key Stages at Secondary School In the UK education system, a child's learning journey is structured into distinct phases known as 'Key Stages' (KS). These stages ensure a progressive and comprehensive curriculum from primary through to the end of compulsory education. At King Edward VI High School, we primarily focus on Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, and, for our Sixth Form students, Key Stage 5. Understanding these stages will help you appreciate the structure of your child's learning and the milestones they will achieve throughout their time with us. Key Stage 3 Key Stage 4 Key Stage 5 View Subjects Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 & 9) – Ages 11-14 Key Stage 3 marks the exciting transition from primary to secondary education. These first three years are crucial for broadening students' academic horizons and developing foundational skills across a wide range of subjects. Curriculum Focus Students will study a broad and balanced curriculum, building upon their primary school knowledge. Core subjects include English, Mathematics, and Science, alongside a diverse array of other subjects such as History, Geography, Modern Foreign Languages, Computing, Design and Technology, Art, Music, Drama, Physical Education, and Religious Education. Skill Development The emphasis is on developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent learning skills. Students are encouraged to explore new subjects, discover their passions, and build a solid academic base that will inform their choices in later years. Assessment There are no national external exams at the end of Key Stage 3. Instead, student progress is continuously assessed by their teachers through ongoing work, class assessments, and regular feedback, providing a clear picture of their understanding and development. Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11) – Ages 14-16 Key Stage 4 is a pivotal period, culminating in national qualifications, primarily the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSEs). During these two years, students begin to specialise, focusing on subjects that align with their interests, strengths, and future aspirations. Core Subjects All students will continue to study a set of compulsory 'core' subjects: English Language , English Literature , Mathematics , and Science (often as Combined Science, leading to two GCSEs, or Separate Science, leading to three separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics). Physical Education and Religious Studies are also part of the curriculum. Option Subjects Students select a number of 'option' subjects from a wide range, allowing them to tailor their learning pathway. These often include subjects from the Arts, Humanities, Modern Foreign Languages, and Technology. Assessment The vast majority of assessment at Key Stage 4 is through formal external examinations taken at the end of Year 11. These GCSE qualifications are nationally recognised and provide the foundation for post-16 education and career pathways. Some grades are awarded through a combination of exams and controlled assessment (coursework), depending on the qualification. Key Stage 5 (Years 12 & 13) – Ages 16-18 (Sixth Form) For students who choose to continue their education with us in our Sixth Form, Key Stage 5 offers a more specialised and in-depth learning experience. This stage typically involves studying advanced qualifications such as A-Levels or vocational courses. Specialisation Students typically choose 3 or 4 subjects to study in depth. These choices are crucial for progression to university, apprenticeships, or direct employment. Independent Learning There is a significant focus on developing independent study skills, critical analysis, and research. Students are encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning. Assessment Assessment usually takes place through a series of external examinations at the end of Year 13 for A-Levels, or through coursework and practical assessments for vocational qualifications. Beyond Academics Key Stage 5 also includes extensive guidance on university applications (UCAS), career pathways, personal development, and preparation for adult life. At King Edward VI High School, our curriculum is carefully designed across all Key Stages to ensure progression, challenge, and opportunity, enabling every student to truly "Be the best YOU can be." If you have any questions about the curriculum or how Key Stages work, please do not hesitate to contact us.

- History of the School | King Edward VI High School, Stafford
Our School History King Edward VI High School was created from two successful Stafford schools. The Free Grammar School of King Edward VI was first established in Stafford in 1550 to provide free education to young boys. In 1862 a new building was erected for the school on Newport Road and would serve as the home of the boys' grammar school for over 100 years. Stafford Girls' High School was established in 1907 as a grammar school for girls and was based at The Oval, just off the Lichfield Road, with some accommodation for students at The Hough Cottage (now at The Hough Retail Park). The school later moved to a new site off West Way, close to Stafford Castle; the modern home of King Edward VI High School. In 1977 King Edward VI Grammar School and Stafford Girls' High School were amalgamated to create a comprehensive off West Way. The old King Edward VI building on Newport Road remained in education hands and was turned over to Chetwynd Middle School before later becoming known as the Chetwynd Centre, home of the Stafford Collegiate, where many Post-16 subjects were taught as part of an agreement between the Stafford secondary schools and Stafford College of Further Education. The old girls' school buildings on The Oval also remained in education hands, later becoming an art college before being converted into residential apartments. The boys' school had the Latin motto "Incepta Persequor" , which loosely translates as "To finish well what's well begun". Science Science Science Science Science Back to Subjects Meet the teachers At King Edward VI High School, we believe that an understanding of science is crucial for all students, given its central role in modern society. Our Science department is dedicated to fostering curiosity and a passion for scientific inquiry, providing a comprehensive curriculum from Key Stage 3 through to A Level. Our goal is to equip students with the knowledge and practical skills they need to explore the world around them, preparing them for a future in a world increasingly dependent on science and technology. Key Stage 3 During Key Stage 3, students follow a broad curriculum based on the 2013 Science National Curriculum. They study a range of topics across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, building a solid foundation of scientific knowledge. Practical work is a key component of this stage, helping students develop higher-level thinking skills, scientific enquiry, and a deeper understanding of core concepts. GCSE At GCSE level, we offer two pathways to cater to students' different strengths and aspirations: AQA Combined Science (Trilogy): This course provides a broad understanding of the key principles of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, leading to two GCSE qualifications. AQA Separate Sciences: This pathway is designed for our most able students, who delve deeper into each discipline. They are awarded three separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, covering additional topics such as Space Physics. A Level In our Sixth Form, we offer A Levels in all three core sciences for those wishing to specialise: Biology (AQA): A challenging and rewarding course that explores the incredible diversity of life. Chemistry (OCR): A fascinating subject that delves into the structure and properties of matter. Physics (AQA): An in-depth study of the fundamental principles of the universe, from mechanics to astrophysics. Practical work is a significant feature of our A Level courses, exceeding the statutory requirements to ensure students are fully prepared for further study and careers in STEM fields. - Criminology | King Edward VI High School, Stafford
Criminology Criminology Criminology Criminology Criminology Back to Subjects Meet the teachers The course offers an excellent grounding in Criminology, especially for those who may already have half an eye on a possible career in the Criminal Justice system. It does not exclude the students from studying the subject at degree level. Key Stage 5 The course is structured around key units that provide a comprehensive understanding of the criminal justice system: Changing Perception of Crime: This unit involves a study of "hidden crimes," such as hate crime, honour crime, and domestic violence, and how they are portrayed by the media. Students will have the opportunity to create materials for a campaign to reduce criminality, applying their learning in a practical way. Theories of Criminality: We explore different theoretical explanations for why people commit crimes, including biological, sociological, and psychological theories. Students learn to apply these theories to a range of criminal behaviours, from gang membership and serial killers to female crime. Crime Scene to Court Room: This unit guides students through the entire process of a criminal investigation. They will learn about the roles of key professionals, including profilers, SOCOs (Scene of Crime Officers), police, and lawyers. A key part of the assessment involves students analysing evidence to determine the guilt of a convicted offender. Crime and Punishment: The final unit focuses on how society controls offenders and the effectiveness of current systems. Students will consider the work of various agencies involved in the Criminal Justice System, such as the probation and prison service, and debate whether our approach to punishment is working. This course is ideal for students with an interest in law, criminology, and sociology, and it provides an excellent foundation for careers in the legal profession, law enforcement, or social services.
