Curriculum Key Stage information Search... Contact Key Stage information Subjects Assessment and Reporting Homework Careers Guidance Understanding Key Stages at Secondary School In the UK education system, a child's learning journey is structured into distinct phases known as 'Key Stages' (KS). These stages ensure a progressive and comprehensive curriculum from primary through to the end of compulsory education. At King Edward VI High School, we primarily focus on Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, and, for our Sixth Form students, Key Stage 5. Understanding these stages will help you appreciate the structure of your child's learning and the milestones they will achieve throughout their time with us. Key Stage 3 Key Stage 4 Key Stage 5 View Subjects Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 & 9) – Ages 11-14 Key Stage 3 marks the exciting transition from primary to secondary education. These first three years are crucial for broadening students' academic horizons and developing foundational skills across a wide range of subjects. Curriculum Focus Students will study a broad and balanced curriculum, building upon their primary school knowledge. Core subjects include English, Mathematics, and Science, alongside a diverse array of other subjects such as History, Geography, Modern Foreign Languages, Computing, Design and Technology, Art, Music, Drama, Physical Education, and Religious Education. Skill Development The emphasis is on developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent learning skills. Students are encouraged to explore new subjects, discover their passions, and build a solid academic base that will inform their choices in later years. Assessment There are no national external exams at the end of Key Stage 3. Instead, student progress is continuously assessed by their teachers through ongoing work, class assessments, and regular feedback, providing a clear picture of their understanding and development. Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11) – Ages 14-16 Key Stage 4 is a pivotal period, culminating in national qualifications, primarily the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSEs). During these two years, students begin to specialise, focusing on subjects that align with their interests, strengths, and future aspirations. Core Subjects All students will continue to study a set of compulsory 'core' subjects: English Language , English Literature , Mathematics , and Science (often as Combined Science, leading to two GCSEs, or Separate Science, leading to three separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics). Physical Education and Religious Studies are also part of the curriculum. Option Subjects Students select a number of 'option' subjects from a wide range, allowing them to tailor their learning pathway. These often include subjects from the Arts, Humanities, Modern Foreign Languages, and Technology. Assessment The vast majority of assessment at Key Stage 4 is through formal external examinations taken at the end of Year 11. These GCSE qualifications are nationally recognised and provide the foundation for post-16 education and career pathways. Some grades are awarded through a combination of exams and controlled assessment (coursework), depending on the qualification. Key Stage 5 (Years 12 & 13) – Ages 16-18 (Sixth Form) For students who choose to continue their education with us in our Sixth Form, Key Stage 5 offers a more specialised and in-depth learning experience. This stage typically involves studying advanced qualifications such as A-Levels or vocational courses. Specialisation Students typically choose 3 or 4 subjects to study in depth. These choices are crucial for progression to university, apprenticeships, or direct employment. Independent Learning There is a significant focus on developing independent study skills, critical analysis, and research. Students are encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning. Assessment Assessment usually takes place through a series of external examinations at the end of Year 13 for A-Levels, or through coursework and practical assessments for vocational qualifications. Beyond Academics Key Stage 5 also includes extensive guidance on university applications (UCAS), career pathways, personal development, and preparation for adult life. At King Edward VI High School, our curriculum is carefully designed across all Key Stages to ensure progression, challenge, and opportunity, enabling every student to truly "Be the best YOU can be." If you have any questions about the curriculum or how Key Stages work, please do not hesitate to contact us.
