We aim to nurture creative problem-solvers who can research, design, and make products to solve real-world problems. By working with a variety of materials and digital technologies, students develop into educated consumers and innovative thinkers. Key Stage 3 During Key Stage 3, students rotate through different specialist areas to gain a broad experience of various materials and processes. They will work with food, paper, wood, polymers, and metal, learning how to apply their theoretical knowledge to practical projects. Their work is assessed on their ability to research, develop, and evaluate their design ideas, building a solid foundation of creative and technical skills. GCSE At GCSE level, students can choose to further their studies in Design and Technology. We offer a core GCSE in Design and Technology, which allows students to specialise in a particular material area. In addition, we offer vocational courses that provide a practical, hands-on approach to specific industries: Hospitality & Catering: This course develops practical cookery skills and an understanding of the hospitality industry. Child Development: This qualification focuses on the physical, emotional, and social development of children. You'll master essential trades like working with wood, brick, plaster, decorating, and tiling. But it's not just practical skills you'll gain – you'll also become a whiz at budgeting and project planning, and develop key employability skills like problem-solving and organisation that employers love. You can achieve a Level 1 or Level 2 Pass, Merit, Distinction, or even a Distinction*, setting you up for success. Assessments include an on-screen exam on safety in construction (40%) and then you choose: either dive into designing the built environment or hone your skills across three construction trades (both 60%). What to Expect & Where You Could Go You won't be building things every single lesson, as there's also theory and written work to master. But you'll definitely be getting your hands dirty, creating exciting projects with various materials! Don't worry about safety gear; we'll provide hard hats and ear defenders, but you'll need your own steel-capped boots. Key Stage 3 Our Key Stage 3 curriculum focuses on building a strong foundation in the four key skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are regularly assessed to track their progress, and we use tools such as sentence builders and knowledge organisers to help them become proficient in core vocabulary and grammar. Lessons are made engaging through the use of stimulating materials, including songs, films, and authentic texts, which also help to build students’ cultural capital. GCSE Students are encouraged to continue their language learning at GCSE. We offer the AQA French GCSE course, which starts in Year 10. Key Stage 3 During Key Stage 3, students follow a broad curriculum based on the 2013 Science National Curriculum. They study a range of topics across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, building a solid foundation of scientific knowledge. Practical work is a key component of this stage, helping students develop higher-level thinking skills, scientific enquiry, and a deeper understanding of core concepts. GCSE At GCSE level, we offer two pathways to cater to students' different strengths and aspirations: AQA Combined Science (Trilogy): This course provides a broad understanding of the key principles of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, leading to two GCSE qualifications. AQA Separate Sciences: This pathway is designed for our most able students, who delve deeper into each discipline. Key Stage 3 During Key Stage 3, students participate in a diverse range of activities, including traditional sports like rugby, football, and gymnastics. Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive and challenging, with groups organised to ensure students are learning and developing in an environment that suits their ability and needs. The sports covered are influenced by the seasons and our excellent school facilities. GCSE At this stage, students have more personalised learning opportunities. Our core PE programme is option-based, allowing students to choose which sports they wish to focus on. We also offer the chance to access off-site facilities, such as golf courses and gyms. For students who wish to pursue the subject academically, we offer Edexcel GCSE PE, which includes a weekly theory lesson in Year 9 to help them make an informed choice. At our school, every student in Key Stage 3 and 4 gets to dive into the exciting world of Economic Well-being and Enterprise. We believe in giving you positive and motivating opportunities to prepare you to be a confident and capable citizen. Key Stage 3 and 4 Get ready for some serious competition! In KS3 and 4, we participate in regional Business and Enterprise days. You'll work in teams to flex your entrepreneurial muscles, culminating in thrilling "Dragons' Den" style presentations. The winners even get to battle it out against other schools in the regional finals, presenting to local business entrepreneurs! We've got a track record of success! Our students have previously competed in the regional finals and even presented their projects to titans of industry like Lord Sugar, Theo Paphitis, Sir Michael Fallon, Ben McBean, and Clair Young. While we didn't win the overall final, our very own Francis Bishop scooped up the Key Stage 4 National Award for Entrepreneurial Skills, presented by Lord Sugar himself! Key Stage 5 At Key Stage 5, your options expand even further! You can choose A Level Economics and Business or a BTEC National Certificate in Business. GCSE History is a popular option at GCSE, where students follow a dynamic and challenging course. The curriculum focuses on four key areas: Conflict and Upheaval: Exploring significant events such as the Peasants' Revolt in England. This comprehensive program, which covers Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education, is designed to prepare our students for the challenges and opportunities of modern Britain. Health & Wellbeing This theme covers a range of topics essential for physical and mental health. From understanding puberty and the importance of a healthy lifestyle in Year 7, to discussing mental health awareness, First Aid, and substance abuse in older years. Relationships & Sex Education (RSE) As students mature, our curriculum provides age-appropriate education on relationships, consent, and sex education. This includes exploring topics such as peer pressure, healthy friendships, domestic abuse, and understanding LGBTQ+ issues, with the goal of fostering respectful and safe relationships. Living in the Wider World This theme prepares students for their future in the wider community.
