Key Stage 3 During Key Stage 3, students have a dedicated weekly lesson in which they study and compare the beliefs, practices, and teachings of a range of religions, including Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, and Sikhism. They also apply their understanding to modern philosophical and moral issues, such as medical ethics, human rights, and prejudice, encouraging critical thinking and informed debate. GCSE At GCSE level, we offer the WJEC Eduqas GCSE in Religious Studies. Students can choose to study either a short or full course. We aim to foster a deep appreciation for mathematics by developing students' fluency in fundamental concepts, their ability to reason logically, and their skills in applying mathematics to solve problems. Our curriculum is designed to be progressive and challenging, ensuring that every student is supported and stretched at each Key Stage. Key Stage 3 Our Key Stage 3 curriculum is based on the 2014 National Curriculum, with a scheme of work adapted from White Rose Maths. This approach builds mathematical skills incrementally and uses interleaving to help students make connections between different topics and consolidate their understanding over time. Key topics covered include Number, Algebra, Ratio, Geometry, Probability, and Statistics. GCSE Level At GCSE level, we follow the Edexcel scheme of work. Students are placed on either the Foundation or Higher tier to best support their learning and maximise their potential. We maintain flexibility to ensure students can change tiers up to March of Year 11 if it is in their best academic interest. For students who need additional support, we offer the Edexcel Entry Level Certificate. A Level In our Sixth Form, we offer the Edexcel Maths A Level. This challenging and rewarding course is split into two core areas: Pure Mathematics, which covers advanced algebraic and calculus concepts, and Applied Mathematics, which focuses on Mechanics and Statistics. Key Stage 3 During Key Stage 3 there is a regular pattern of weekly extended learning set on for each subject which is expected to be handed in soon after being set. Key Stage 4 In Key Stage 4 more flexible arrangements apply particularly in the context of controlled assessment and projects. A range of elements is included in the school’s Life Matters programme which runs throughout Years 7 - 13. In Year 11, there is a concentration on preparation for the range of Post-16 choices. Students have access to a Careers Adviser from Entrust’s Careers and Participation Service and computer programmes which help to inform and support decisions. We have a careers team who have designed a programme to link to the Gatsby Benchmarks and uses Unifrog as a source of advice and guidance. We also employ independent careers advice for students to make appointments for individual consultation. The school is working with the Careers and Enterprise Company (CEC) to delivery our CEIAG programme. This is reviewed using the Careers Compass Plus tool. We complete this review every half term. We have a comprehensive careers education and guidance program, which includes detailed preparation for post-16 courses and all work experience placements. King Edward VI has a dedicated careers team headed by Miss M Mee and Miss D Tickell. Entrust provide our independent careers advisor for all students. They offer impartial advice and guidance from Year 9 right through to Year 13. Additional support is provided for students in Year 9 when they are choosing their Key Stage 4 (GCSE/BTEC) options. The Government’s Careers Strategy and statutory guidance uses the Gatsby Benchmarks to set out a range of requirements that schools and colleges must meet. These are currently being embedded in English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Business & IT. Subject teachers and leaders understand the KEVI careers programme and learning outcomes. This is audited and tracked within careers programme and strategic careers plan by the Careers Leader. Subject teachers and leaders are also supported by the careers team and the CEC to further embed good careers practice within their subject areas. This means our curriculum learning is linked to careers learning which creates a coherent rational for careers within each subject area. Real life contexts and examples are linked to the teaching which shows relevance to the students and helps them engage more in the learning process.
